Cory powell

A native of Englewood, Cory has considered this area his home for the better part of 40 years. He has found comfort and satisfaction in customer-focused roles throughout his professional life, whether that’s due to his problem-solving nature or his innate desire to help others. Cory also has a passion for technology in all forms and plans on returning to college to pursue a career in cybersecurity or elsewhere in the broader I.T. field.

Cory initially discovered Break Bread as a neighbor in need. In 2019, he was struggling to make ends meet as he continued to fight a nearly lifelong battle with anxiety, depression, and subsequent alcohol addiction. Without much hope on the horizon, Cory was desperately seeking nourishment for not just his body, but heart and mind as well. Though he was only able to make his way to our Saturday meals on a handful of occasions, he greatly treasures those experiences. For him, Break Bread provided a temporary respite from both hunger and isolation, replacing it with “not just food, but great food, and wonderful people to share it with.” Cory’s situation did not make an immediate turn for the better, unfortunately, and he found himself unhoused on two different occasions over the course of the next year. It wasn’t until late 2020 that he finally made his most pronounced effort, probably ever, at setting his life back on track.

Now, just four short years after first sharing a meal with us, Cory finds himself filling new seat at Break Bread. While his condition may be vastly different from when we first crossed paths, his heart is not. Cory has always felt drawn to help others and his experiences have only helped to strengthen that. He hopes to make Break Bread part of a future spent focused on those in need of the same grace and solidarity that has aided in his journey thus far.

An Important Message from Break Bread

After nearly eight incredible years of building community around shared meals, Break Bread will be closing our doors following our  final celebration meal on

October 25, 2025.

This decision is made with heavy hearts and comes after careful evaluation of our organization's sustainability. While we're sad to say goodbye, we're overwhelmed with gratitude for the 150,000+ meals shared and the beautiful community we built together.

Our final weeks will be a celebration of the friendships formed, the dignity shared, and the magic created when people come together around the dinner table.
